Do you dream of sewing your own clothes but feel like it’s impossible?

Do pattern instructions feel like they’re written in a foreign language?

Have you ever started a sewing project, then got so frustrated and confused that you just gave up?

Are you tired of seeing other people’s amazing projects online and wondering “Why can’t I do that?”

If any of that sounds familiar, then keep reading!

Hi, my name’s Abbie!  I’ve been sewing for over 10 years, but guess what?  When I first started sewing, I was just as confused as you are now. There’s a lot of new things to learn and it can be confusing just trying to figure out where to start! You’ve got fabric, machines, tools, patterns, and the list goes on.

But don’t worry.

I’ve learned a thing or two over the past decade, and I’ve got some good news for you. Once you make it through your first project or two,  things start to get a lot easier.

So that’s why I have created this course. I want to walk through your first project, step-by-step, so we can clear up the confusion and get you confidently creating your dream clothes.

Let me explain how that’s gonna work.

How To Read A

Sewing Pattern!

~ Modules ~

Week 0:

Supplies

Before we even get started, you’ll get access to my Sewing Library. You’ll get access to:

  • Sewing Tools List : All the tools you’ll need to have before starting your first project
  • Beginner’s Guide to Sewing Machines: Overview of all the features you’ll want to look for in a sewing machine
  • Dream Machine Checklist: Super simple checklist to help you find the perfect sewing machine
  • And more!

*** You’ll need to have all your tools + sewing machine together before we begin the course.

During the first week, you’ll get access to the following modules:

~ How To Thread Your Machine

~ How To Take Measurements (The Basics)

~ How To Print Your Pattern

Each module includes a step-by-step video and a Quick Reference PDF.

This week is to make sure everyone understands the basics before we jump into creating your first design.

Week 1:

Sewing Basics

Which Pattern Will We Be Creating?

You Decide!

These super versatile t-shirt patterns from DIBY Club are a great starting point for your #MeMade wardrobe.

Mix and match fabrics, sleeve lengths, and collar styles to create a whole new wardrobe just from this pattern!

Plus!

The steps are the same for both men + women so you can make clothes for the whole family!

Weeks 2-4:

Creating Your Design Step-by-Step

For the rest of the course, I will give you video tutorials for each step of the pattern instructions.

The videos will explain what’s happening in each step, then show you exactly how to do it yourself.

I’ll break the pattern down into chunks, so each week you’ll get access to a new set of videos.

And now for the LIVE part...

You’ll have access to a private FB group, along with the other designers who sign up for the course. This FB group will give you:

~ A place to meet + be inspired by fellow designers

~ Ask any q’s you have about the project + ask for help if you get stuck or have problems

~ Access to weekly office hours where you can chat with me 1:1

~ Response to any Q within 48 hours

~ Be part of a sewing community!

The goal of this course is to help you feel confident about sewing your own clothes. If at any point you feel frustrated or confused, post about it in the FB group. I will be in their DAILY to make sure everyone is making progress and understands each step.

"I'm so happy to have finally made an article of clothing....something I've wanted to do for a long time! Thank you so much Abbie Messmer for opening new doors for all of us with this great class! I honestly don't know if I'd have ever tried knits without this it."

So who am I , exactly?

So, like I said earlier, my name’s Abbie and I’m a sewing fanatic. I taught myself how to sew in the 9th grade (who does that?) and haven’t been able to stop since. If you can think of it, I’ve probably sewn it. Summer dresses, prom dresses, backpacks, a three-piece suit, stuffed animals, sweaters, a leather jacket, blankets, the list goes on.

In college, I had my mind blown when I ended up getting one my fashion designs accepted into an international sewing competition. And that competition changed my life (and the way I sew) forever. At that competition, I found incredible resources I had never heard of before that explained how to sew clothes using the same techniques as the fashion industry.

Fun Fact: The big 4 pattern brands (Simplicity, Vogue, Butterick, and McCalls) don’t always follow industry standards. They sort of make up their own methods to make things easier. The problem with that is your finished garments can tend to look a little crafty, rather than professional. Who knew!

And that’s why I created D.I.Y. Fashion Rebel. I want to help D.I.Y. designers like yourself find the resources you need to make clothes, not crafts. Let’s work together to end the struggle + confusion so you can confidently start designing the clothing (and life) of your dreams!
